“You want me to play with this tiny doll? You must be joking.”

I posted a picture of a doll that had taken some beating by Manu. I mentioned that when I handed that doll to Manu who was only a few months old at that time, he laughed out loud and didn't take the doll for a while in his hand thinking we were joking. I got a call from my brother and my cousin asking me if he really did laugh.

Manu has been playing with really big toys; he had a Mickey Mouse Mira bought before he was born. That mouse was roughly the size of Manu when he used to play with it or rather drag him around with its tail. Then there is a huge teddy bear that Manu couldn't even hold properly and most of the times it was difficult to tell if Manu is playing with Teddy or the Teddy is playing with Manu.

Manu playing with the Teddy his aunt made for him
We set the expectations wrong at an early age. This is a teddy Mira's sister made for Manu and he expected all his toys to be this big.

Naturally the expectations were set quite high and we found that out when we tried to hand him a small white teddy, about 7-8 inches tall. It was when Manu didn't really knew that he can choose not to take something offered to him and his natural reaction was to hold anything taken in his reach. He didn't have very great motor skills and didn't know how to throw things away. I offered him the teddy and he looked at it suspiciously and took it in his hand and quietly placed it on the bed besides him and got busy with the bigger toys. We repeated this a few times and every time he would take the teddy and just drop it.

We were cleaning out one of our closet when manu was a little older. I saw the doll and decided to offer it to him but he still had his expectations set quite high and just laughed at it and then took it and gave it's head a good massage.
