“Have a complaint as a consumer, go to the shop or business who gave you substandard product and services and ask for refund or replacement and don't forget to take a camera with you to take a few photographs.”

I had some problems with my Tata Indicom Broadband account about which I wrote sometime back. After I gave up talking to the call center people, I decided to speak to someone higher up. I did some looking around and got the contact details of the Executive Director of Tata Indicom and I wrote him a mail. For good measures, I printed that out as well and couriered a copy to him.

I have no way to find out if it was indeed a result of my mail to that person but after I sent that mail, I got a call from a guy and he told me that he has been assigned to my case. He kept calling me up taking details they needed to process my complaint and finally he called to let me know that money has been rolled back to my account and sure enough, 842 bucks were in my credit card account.

Birdy's store in Sher-e-Punjam in Andheri east from where I bought the cake

More recently I had problems with Birdy's restaurant when I got a cake that was stale and full of water. I can visualize the staff of Birdy's sprinkling the cake with water like the vegetable vendors do to keep their veggies fresh. Anyway, I called them when they failed to get in touch with me and the manager told me that I could collect stuff worth the price of the cake from their shop. I went there a couple of days later and collected a few things including a box of cookies. The shop is generally expensive and the goods they have don't taste very good but I guess that is beside the point.

The 20 gms box of cookies that said 500gms

I got that stuff and the next morning, I looked at the box of cookies with a sticker stating the weight to be 50gms. No way in hell that could have weighed 500gms. When I went to the local grocer for milk, I took the box with me and he weighed and it was only 200gms. 70 bucks for a box of 500gms of cookies that actually had only 200gms. I went to the store again and showed it to the staff in the shop. The manager was not there at the time. The two boys in the shop apologized and offered me another box with a correct sticker that said 200gms. I looked at the shelf and found another box with the 500gms stickers. The guys promised to remove that box from the shelf as well and gave me the suggestion book to write my complaint

A few minutes after I got home, I got a call from the manager and he repeatedly apologized for the mistake and then asked me way I had taken the photographs of the store that I have posted above.

The moral of the story is sometimes you get taken for a ride because people think you won't complain. What is even more interesting is what the fear of escalation of the problem can do. The reaction of the manager suggests that he was worried that I might get all this published somewhere.... he was not so wrong after all.
