“or should I say selling your cake and retaining it too because this is exactly what happened at Birdy's last Sunday. ”

Last Sunday Manu turned 2 and one very obvious thing we had to do was to buy a cake. We have been buying cakes from Mongini's ever since we came to Bombay and I must say that I am not too thrilled by the kind of cakes they make. We have been ordering cakes from Birdy's in our office se I decided that I will get the cake fro Manu from there.

In the afternoon, we went to a temple and a gurudwara first and then went to the Sher-e-Punjab store of Birdy's to pick up a cake. We wanted to buy a pineapple cake but one of the salesgirl there recommended some fruitcake that was not too different from the one we wanted so we decided to go by what she suggested.

We took the cake home and kept it in the fridge. Since Mira's mom passed away a month ago, we decided not to have a party; instead we decided to take Manu somewhere he would enjoy. We took him to a shopping mall in Malad and came back in the evening.

We were not having a party but still it was Manu's birthday so we spent about an hour decorating our living room and finally at the time he was born, we decided to cut the cake.

He cut the cake but was not interested in eating it. Mira and I tasted it and we didn't like it all that much. The cream was a little sour and the cake had a lot of water. It was like having sweet dhokla.

After some time I decided to call the store and complain about the quality of the cake. When I called them they asked me if I have some of it left and I told that more than half of it was still there. The guy asked me if I could take it down to the store.

“Well, it is over for me now and I don't really have any motivation to bring the cake to you but if you are so much worried about the quality of your stuff, maybe you can send someone over here to pick it up.” Sure enough a guy came over and he told me that the manager would be getting in touch with me.

I have worked in the hospitality industry for two years and usually for something like this, the restaurants replace the spoiled food with new one with an apology, this is not just the established restaurants but small food stalls as well.

The manager didn't get in touch with me, I called then the next day and he said that he would definitely get back to me as soon as he gets the results from the lab. I am wondering what kind of tests are they running on the cake whose results he is expecting. You don't need to go to a lab to find out the cream is sour. You can taste it.

As it stands now, I have paid Birdy's 250 bucks for a half-kilo cake and I have got only 200 Gms (or less) of a stale cake.
