There is an old saying in my mother tongue-“Someone else money and our own intelligence always seem to be much greater than it is .” And you can see the examples of it all around you all day long -in the man telling the puncture maker how to take off the tyre from the rim or how to put the jack, in the guy who abused the security guard and entered from a no entry gate in our society and in the guy who won't park his car as instructed by the parking attendant but will shout at him when he can't take his car out in the. Didn't we hire those people to manage these very things for us?
We believe, for some reason or the other, that we can do anything better than the person doing it even if that person specializes in that and has years of experience in doing it.
It's something that I observe around me every day and it is not limited to people doing manual labour, it is present in all kind of work, even in jobs you and I do. I have experience of 9 years as a designer but the client always believes that he knows more than I do and this problem is more prevalent in our country. We Indians don't trust people to do for which they are hired.
There are examples of it in the advertising industry as well. Ask any adman and he can tell you countless stories of how clients ruined a perfectly good campaign by doing what they thought was right. There is a man who has an experience in advertising of 10 years, who earns a living by creating ads is still not trusted enough by his client when it comes to creating an single ad, leave aside an entire campaign. A very good example of this is the book called “Where the suckers moon.”
So what do we do in a situation like this? Do what the client is forcing you to do, collect your fee and let the client suffer the consequences of his own action. No seriously what do we do? I guess what's at stake here is our reputation along with the business of our clients and we have to gave both to do that, we need to be prepared to fight hard if required. Fight to give the client desired results while he himself trying to derail the process. This is easier said than done and there are times when we are not able to do it. Tell me if you have some better way of handling this situation or want to share some of your experiences when a client forced you to do something you knew was wrong.
