Innovation is the buzzword in our office currently. Everyone is talking about it. The other thing that is popular is brainstorming and how it is vital in coming up with good solutions. More heads generate more ideas than one; a group of people will get more ideas than they would get while sitting in isolation.
I totally support the idea. I have tried it myself and have seen that we did come up with more good quality ideas than we would have if we were working in isolation.
There is one thing that came to my mind while surfing the net. I have seen a lot of good sites that are done by companies. There must have been bouncing of ideas among the team or “brainstorming” before the solution was created. For each such site, I see 10 sites of individuals, which are very good. Sites that were done in isolation. I’m talking about web sites and although web is working in small area to debate the benefits of working alone but still what I have observed can’t be ignored.
A folio site of a designer is done by him so obviously no brainstorming was involved. Actually if you look and compare such sites, you will see that if only one person is working on something the results are great and if more people are working, the results are not as good. It is something like too many cooks spoiling the broth. How do we explain this? Send me a line if you have suggestions.
